So tell me….how much time did you spend learning about nutrition and breastfeeding in med school? Ive heard it is VERY limited - which makes since considering many doctors do not encourage extended breastfeeding nor look to nutritional variables for curing illness. Thanks for your time.

Paula: I actually had some education on breastfeeding way back in med school. Enough to convince me that I’m going to at least try breastfeeding when I become a mother.
But, well, it’s just one topic out of the multitude of topics we had. I had to reeducate myself about it because as with anything we didn’t have any practice on, the knowledge fades. My field is ophthalmology and we don’t exactly deal with breastfeeding :).
Regarding discouraging extended breastfeeding, it’s not just doctors. My mother believed that I was doing my son a disservice because I breastfed him and he didn’t become as chubby as she wanted (which is how a lot of people here want their kids to be). Especialy when I breastfed beyond 1 year.
